Moses and Lydia Baker Delano were early settlers in Albany. The Delano and the Leavitt families had been neighbors and associates in Grantham, NH. Deborah Delano married Nathaniel Leavitt, son of Jeremiah and Sarah Shannon Leavitt, in 1817. Nathaniel and Deborah settled for a time near Irasburg, VT. After the birth of their, second child, they joined the Jeremiah Leavitt family, settling in Hatley, Stanstead, Quebec. To Nathaniel and Deborah were born six children:

Their Children:
Salena Leavitt, born 181 7, Irasburg, Orleans, VT. Died December 6, 1884, Massawippi, Hatley Township, Quebec.
Roxana Leavitt, born December 15, 1818, Irasburg, Orleans, VT. Died June 16, 1881, American Fork, Utah, UT.
Caroline Elizabeth Leavitt, born June 30, 1819, Hatley, Stanstead, Quebec. Died April 13, 1869, Albany, Orleans, VT.

John Leavitt, born March 18, 1827, Hatley, Stanstead, Quebec. Died August 1, 1899, Ogden, Weber, UT.

Deborah Delano Leavitt died April 18, 1829. In the autumn of that year, Nathaniel Leavitt married Betsy Bean of Hatley, Quebec. To this marriage were born three children, Rosilla, Mary Jane, and Wire. In 1837, 55 members of the extended Leavitt family left Hatley, bound for Kirtland, Ohio, where they hoped to join with the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Four of Deborah's children were in that group: Roxana, Nathaniel, Flavilla Lucy and John. When Nathaniel died enroute, in Michigan, these four children continued the journey with other members of the Leavitt family. They became early pioneering settlers of the Great American West. Betsy returned to Quebec with her three small children. Salena and Caroline Elizabeth, who had remained in the east, reared their families and became prominent citizens in their own communities of Massawippi, Quebec and Albany, VT. Today, Nathaniel and Deborah Delano Leavitt have a large posterity residing in both the eastern and the western United States and in Canada. Because the burial place of Deborah Delano Leavitt is unknown, this memorial marker is placed at the gravesite of her parents to honor her memory and theirs, celebrating a symbolic reconnection with her family members who departed so long ago.

Sarah Leavitt was the seventh child and second daughter born to Jeremiah and Sarah Shannon Leavitt. Her grandparents were Nathaniel and Lydia Sanborn Leavitt and Thomas and Ann Rand Shannon. As a small child, she traveled from New Hampshire with her parents and their family to settle in Hatley, Quebec, Canada. In 1837, fifty five members of the Leavitt family left Hatley, Quebec, to join with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kirtland, Ohio. Sarah and William were well-settled and thriving in this Vermont valley. The parting that occurred with the westward migration became all too permanent. Twenty two members of the Leavitt family died along the way, including Sarah's mother, Sarah Shannon Leavitt, all five of her brothers, her sister Betsy, and her sister in law, Lucy Rowell Leavitt.

William Rowell, who had come north from Plainfield, New Hampshire as a young man, became a civic and business leader in Albany.

Along this quiet path one senses some of the tender events in the lives of Willam and Sarah Leavitt Rowell, for here, also, are the resting places of their children. Philena who died at age 29, lies alongside her little son, Wm. Henry Chamberlin, who died one month after his mother. Wallace William, age twenty five at his death, lies a few steps away. Mary, who died at age 6, lies beside him. Viola, upon whose memorial stone this plaque is placed, lived to a good old age and rests here as well. Sarah Jane Rowell Simpson's burial place is in nearby Craftsbury.

The members of the Leavitt families who successfully completed the westward migration became a large extended family. They were colonizers and among the earliest settlers in the great American West. This memorial, placed to honor their memory, marks a symbolic reconnection of William and Sarah Leavitt Rowell with the western branch of their Leavitt Family.

Enoch Rowell was a member of the Rowell family who were early settlers in Albany, Vermont. His grandparents were Sgt. Enoch Rowell and Rachel Worthen of Plainfield, New Hampshire. His father, Daniel Rowell, came to Albany with his brothers to settle. Caroline Elizabeth Leavitt Rowell was a member of a large Leavitt family. Her grandparents, Jeremiah and Sarah Shannon Leavitt, were among the earliest settlers in Hatley, Stanstead, Quebec, Canada. Her Delano grandparents came early to IrasburgVt.

In 1837, fifty five members of Caroline Elizabeth Leavitt's extended family left Hatley, bound for Kirtland Ohio to find the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Caroline Elizabeth remained in Vermont. As they traveled, twenty two of their num ber perished. Among those who died was Caroline Elizabeth's father, Nathaniel Leavitt. Her mother, Deborah Delano, had died earlier. Two of her sisters, Roxana and Flavilla Lucy, and two brothers, Nathaniel Jr and John, did live to settle in the west. In consequence of the difficulties of communication and travel, the western branch of the Leavitt family lost contact with Caroline Elizabeth and her posterity.

The members of the Leavitt family who successfully completed the westward migration became a large extended family. They were colonizers and earliest settlers in many of the western states. This memorial marks a symbolic reuniting of Caroline Elizabeth Leavitt Rowell with her extended Leavitt family.

Lemuel Sturtevant was a patriot of the Revolutionary War. As a result of his service, he was awarded property in Barton, Vermont, and moved his family there. He kept a store in Barton for a time. He was noted to have been an hospitable man and a man of great faith. He and Priscilla welcomed teachers of all religious persuasions into their home, and invited neighbors to hear the discourses. Their eleventh child, Sarah Sturtevant married young Jeremiah Leavitt, on March 6, 1817. They moved to Hatley, Quebec, where they carved out a home and farm. In 1837, Jeremiah and Sarah Sturtevant Leavitt left Hatley, in a company of 55 Leavitt family members. They were bound for Kirtland, Ohio, where they hoped to join with the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was the last time Sarah Sturtevant Leavitt would have seen her parents and siblings. Sarah's husband, Jeremiah Leavitt, died at Bonaparte Iowa, before they reached their destination. She remained the matriarch of a large posterity, who were colonizers and settlers of the great American West. The placing of this memorial in honor of Sarah Sturtevant Leavitt, her parents and her siblings, is a symbolic reconnection of these of this family, separated those many years ago.

Phineas and Catherine Stone Cowles were early settlers of Irasburg, Vermont, coming to this valley from New Hampshire, between 1803 and 1805. Phineas had served in the Revolutionary War. Like many families, they lost a number of their children to early death. One of those deaths was their first-born Abigail, who died leaving three young children and her widowed husband, Wiear Leavitt. Later, their daughter, Phoebe, married Wiear Leavitt and to them were born six more children. In 1837, Wiear and Phoebe Cowles Leavitt, and most of their children, were among a party of 55 Leavitt family members who had embraced the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and who migrated west to join the Church. Though after the death of Catherine Cowles, Phineas Cowles was, himself, baptized in the faith, he stayed behind and lived out his life among the people with whom he had worked to build his community. The placing of this plaque is a symbolic reconnection with the children and grandchildren of Phineas and Catherine Cowles, who bade goodbye those many years ago.
